In the band's earlier years, The Fergies gained recognition by winning a number of local, state and national band and song writing competitions and awards. The Fergies' lead singer, Kahlia Ferguson, won the senior category of the Australian Children's Music Foundation's (ACMF) National Song Writing Competition two years in a row, with Little Bird in 2008 and Soldier Boy in 2009. In 2010 they were also awarded the Secondary School Award in the Queensland music industry's Q Song Awards in Brisbane. In the same year, The Fergies won the grand final of Original Selection at King's Beach Tavern. The group also won in the YoungStar Awards 2010-2011. They were also finalists in a national school band competition, MySchoolAct 2011.
According to the band's official Tumblr page, the former name "Freak Morice" was inspired by the film ''Madagascar''. "The name Freak Morice came from the movie Madagascar. There's a line in it we used to say all the time: 'Shut up Maurice! Can't you see you're insulting the Freaks?!' ... It means a lot more than that now though, ''Embrace your Inner Freak'' is our motto. It basically means embrace that part of you that's unique and different, because that's what makes you, you." says the band in a reply to a fan question.
